CHFFF – Virtual Version

Choose Health: Food, Fun, and Fitness

Questions or feedback: FNEC-admin@cornell.edu

Use of Virtual CHFFF:

The virtual version of CHFFF is shared with the following understanding:

  • The lessons will be used as written.
    • Minor modifications for local program requirements such as adding institutional logos is appropriate; please request permission for any other changes.
  • The lessons will be used for not-for-profit educational use only.
  • Cornell University will be acknowledged in all uses.

Overview

  • Lessons are about 1 hour and are designed to be taught live via Zoom.
  • A co-facilitator is recommended to allow smaller group activities in two break-out rooms.
  • Various PowerPoint and Zoom features are used to make the lessons engaging and interactive, but take practice to do smoothly.
    • To ensure successful teaching, view the training videos as you practice and see the detailed instructions provided in the Facilitator Notes and in the Overview and Tips document.
  • Lesson Format:
    • Lesson slides are in PowerPoint® and scripted Facilitator Notes are in Word®. You need access to both as you teach.
    • The slides are therefore set to open in an adjustable sub-window even when shared via Zoom, rather than the default full-screen setting, so you can see the Facilitator Notes in another window on the same screen as you teach.
    • The slide files are large (20-30 MB); confirm adequate space for download and upload to an online file storage system as needed.
    • Additional copies of the breakout room slides are provided for a co-facilitator.
  • SNAP-Ed: A separate set of slides is provided for SNAP-Ed use, with brand names blocked out (see below).
  • As in the print version, lessons use the ‘4A’ format to keep them relevant and engaging:
    • “Anchor” to connect to previous experience,
    • “Add” new information,
    • “Apply” the new information by doing something interactive with it, and
    • “Away” to set a goal for use in their daily lives.
  • The lessons were created with the help of 8 college interns as part of a Choose Health Actions Teens (CHAT) project in New York City in summer 2020.

 Lesson Preparation and Training Resources

The Virtual CHFFF lessons take some practice and preparation to teach well. Start by reviewing the following:

  • Overview and Tips for Teaching CHFFF Virtually
    • Important information for successful teaching, including detailed instructions for the various Zoom and PowerPoint features used
  • Training Webinar
    • View this 1 hour webinar for an overview of Virtual CHFFF with teaching tips (edited recording of a NY EFNEP training conducted 12/10/20)

Practice teaching the lessons:

  • Training Videos: As you practice, watch these 20-minute recordings of actual teaching of virtual CHFFF. Brief clips of all parts of each lesson are included, taught by the college interns who helped develop them and by teens in our NYC CHAT program (see Appendix 3 of Overview document).
  • Recommended: Watch part of a lesson video, then practice that part using the notes and the slides, then watch and practice the next part, and so on.
  • Be sure to practice in Slide Show View to see and advance the animated parts, exiting to Normal View to practice the interactive parts that require moving images around, entering text, and such.
  • Also practice the live demonstrations (sugar in drinks, blubber burgers), active games, and other parts that require stopping slide sharing and making sure participants can view you or your hands.

Review nutrition content:

  • Lesson Backgrounds
    • Review these 1-page summaries of key nutrition content for each lesson.
  • Virtual Jeopardy game
    • Play this as a fun way to review key nutrition content from the lessons and related issues to prepare you for questions.
    • To play, open in Slide Show view and click any square on the main slide to go to a question for a team or individual to answer, then click where indicated to reveal the correct answer and then to return to the main slide.
    • Note: This meant for educators and teen teachers, not participants, since the content goes beyond what is taught in the CHFFF lessons.
